Good things come from mistakes!

This delightful recipe of Thermomix Potato Gems had its origins in a humorous mishap that I stumbled upon. It all began when I had the intention of peeling some potatoes for my evening meal in the Thermomix. While engrossed in conversation with my friend Chris, I commenced the peeling process. I carefully placed the potatoes into the bowl and, without much thought, programmed the Thermomix to peel them for a brief 3 minutes.

As I continued chatting, the Thermomix suddenly emitted a rather comical “clunk clunk” sound upon starting, which, I must admit, made me chuckle. However, I was so engrossed in our conversation by that point that I didn’t pay it much heed. About a minute into our chat, I had a sudden realization: the Thermomix’s sound was oddly amiss. I promptly halted it and peered into the bowl.

What I discovered inside the Thermomix was a bowl filled with neatly chopped potatoes. The reason behind this peculiar outcome was quite simple: I had forgotten to attach the peeling blade. Initially, I regarded it as a bit of a mishap, even a waste. In good spirits, I couldn’t help but laugh about my little adventure, and I took to social media to share my amusing mishap, offering a friendly reminder to everyone to “be cautious” and avoid repeating my oversight.

Not wanting to let the potatoes go to waste, I turned to Instagram to seek suggestions for what I could create with this unexpected bounty. The responses were incredibly creative, ranging from potato pancakes, hash browns, mashed potatoes, plaki, pom noisettes, and various other inventive ideas. My daughter recommended potato gems, as her child adored them, but she was concerned about the additives commonly found in store-bought versions.

With a mission in mind, I was ready to embark on this culinary adventure, and I have to say it was quite enjoyable.

Initially, I contemplated shaping the potato mixture into nugget-like forms, but that seemed a bit too labor-intensive, and efficiency is key, especially when working from home. So, I decided to find an alternative, and lo and behold, I stumbled upon my mini muffin tray in the cupboard. It felt like the perfect solution. A quick spray of olive oil, and I was off to the races. I managed to create 24 potato gems in just one minute, a stark contrast to the time it would take to shape a single nugget – talk about a time-saving revelation!

What began as a comical mishap, one I initially considered a humorous disaster, turned into a delightful surprise for everyone, especially my granddaughter. I allowed the potato gems to cool, and then stashed them away in the freezer, ready to serve as a convenient addition to her evening meal.

What's Needed

  • Thermomix
  • Oven
Great for little ones or big ones that like potato bites

Ingredients
  

  • 600 mls Water
  • 600 gms Potatoes
  • 600 mls Water
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 100 gms Tasty Cheese Mozzarella would be great also
  • 30 gms Butter melted
  • 1 Egg
  • 1 tsp Stock paste Vegetable, Chicken or Beef
  • 1 tsp Onion Power Optional
  • 1 tsp Black pepper Optional

Instructions
 

  • Set oven to 220 degrees
  • Add cheese cut up to Thermomix bowl - Place on lid and MC cup
    5 seconds | Speed 7
    Set aside in large bowl
    100 gms Tasty Cheese
  • Add water to TM bowl. Add chopped potatoes (3cm) and add to TM bowl - Place on lid and MC cup
    1 minutes | Speed 4
    Check and repeat if necessary
    Remember, mine was a mistake cook to make this recipes
    600 gms Potatoes, 600 mls Water
  • Drain and rinse potatoes well under cold water
  • Place potatoes back into TM bowl
    Add water and salt - Place on lid and Simmer Basket
    6 minutes | 100 Degrees | REVERSE | Speed 2
    Test CAREFULLY that potatoes are JUST cooked
    600 mls Water, 1 tsp Salt
  • Drain and rinse with cold water so stop cooking process
  • Place cooked potato on a clean tea towel and press out excess water. When done add to large bowl with the cheese
  • Rinse and dry off bowl - don't need to be too fussy. Add butter - Place on lid and MC cup
    2 minutes | 50 degrees | Speed 2
    Add to bowl with Cheese and potatoes and mix through
    30 gms Butter
  • Place egg, stock and any optional ingredients
    1 Egg, 1 tsp Stock paste, 1 tsp Onion Power, 1 tsp Black pepper
  • Mix to combine and either
    Shape into nugget size or
    Scoop 1 tsp into mini muffin trays.
    If using the tray - I recommend spray lightly with olive oil or cooking spray.
  • Place in oven and cook for 15-20 minutes
    ENJOY!
