Who never seems to have this in the cupboard

Creating your own coconut cream and milk in a Thermomix is not only easy but also a cost-effective alternative to store-bought coconut products. Most of us have desiccated or shredded coconut in our pantry for various culinary uses, but you can also keep it on hand for making your own coconut cream and milk. Here’s a simple guide to creating these coconut products using your Thermomix:

Ingredients and Equipment:

  • A bag of shredded coconut (250g)
  • Thermomix

Bag of Shredded Coconut – 250g – $2.00 approx makes

  • Coconut Cream x 2 (@$2.50 each)
  • Coconut Milk x 6 (@$3.90 each)

Steps to Make Coconut Cream:

1. Blend and Process:

  • Start by adding 100gms shredded coconut into your Thermomix bowl.
  • Add 300gms Water

2. Blend and Process:

  • Leave both ingredients in TM bow for approx 5 minutes.
  • 2 minutes | 37 degrees | Speed 2
  • Blend 1 minute | Speed 9

3. Strain the Mixture:

  • Place a nut milk bag or fine strainer over a clean bowl.
  • Pour the blended coconut mixture into the nut milk bag or strainer.
  • Squeeze or press the bag/strainer to extract the coconut cream. You’ll notice that the cream is thick and creamy, resembling store-bought coconut cream.

4. Store and Use:

  • Transfer the freshly made coconut cream into a clean container or jar.
  • You can refrigerate it for immediate use or store it in the freezer for longer-term storage. Make sure to label the container with the date for reference.

TWO Wayes of Making Coconut Milk:

FIRST – After making Coconut Cream

1. Reuse the Residue:

  • After extracting the coconut cream, you’ll be left with a coconut residue in the nut milk bag or strainer. Don’t discard this residue; you can use it to make coconut milk.

2. Blend Again:

  • Return the coconut residue to the Thermomix bowl.
  • Add about 300ml of water to the residue in the bowl.
  • Blend at a high speed for approximately 30 seconds. This will create a coconut milk mixture.

3. Strain and Store:

  • Strain the coconut milk mixture through a nut milk bag or fine strainer into a separate container.
  • Squeeze or press to extract all the liquid from the residue.
  • Your freshly made coconut milk is ready for use.

Steps to Make Coconut Milk:

1. Grind the Coconut:

  • Start by adding 40gms of shredded coconut into your Thermomix bowl.
  • Add 400 gms Water

2. Blend and Process:

  • Blend the shredded coconut at a high speed, typically around Speed 10, for about 2 minutes or until it becomes a fine powder. This process extracts the coconut cream from the shredded coconut.

Benefits of Making Your Own Coconut Cream and Milk:

Cost-Effective: As mentioned, making your own coconut products is much cheaper than buying them from the store. A bag of shredded coconut can yield several batches of coconut cream and milk, providing substantial savings over time.

Freshness: Homemade coconut cream and milk are fresher and often have a more pronounced coconut flavor compared to store-bought versions.

Control Over Ingredients: When you make your own, you have control over the quality of ingredients used, ensuring that there are no additives, preservatives, or artificial flavors.

By following these simple steps, you can create your own coconut cream and milk in your Thermomix, enhancing your cooking versatility and saving money in the process. Whether you use them in savory dishes, desserts, or beverages, you’ll appreciate the rich, authentic coconut flavor that homemade coconut products bring to your culinary creations.
